Armed individual released under restricted terms, referred to as "Rust" shooter.

Rust Armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, Released from Prison Under Strict Conditions

In a significant development, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the Western film "Rust," has been released from prison after serving her sentence for her role in the October 21, 2021, fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The 28-year-old armorer was released from prison yesterday, as confirmed by New Mexico authorities to "Entertainment Weekly."

Gutierrez-Reed's release comes with stringent probation conditions, including reporting to a probation officer in Bullhead City, Arizona, a nightly curfew, a strict no-contact order with the victim's family, and a ban on associating with weapons. The conditions were outlined in documents obtained by "Entertainment Weekly."

In early March 2024, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed guilty of negligent homicide for her negligence on the "Rust" set, which led to Hutchins' death. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer handed down a sentence of 18 months in prison without probation in mid-April, according to the U.S. site "Variety." The court emphasized that Gutierrez-Reed had shown no remorse at any point during the proceedings.

Judge Sommer stated in her sentencing, "You alone turned a safe weapon into a deadly one. Without you, Mrs. Hutchins would be alive, a husband would have his partner, and a little boy would have his mother." In a prepared statement, Gutierrez-Reed expressed her sadness over the sensationalized media portrayal of her and described herself as a "complete monster."

The tragic incident occurred when a shot fired from a gun held by actor Alec Baldwin struck Hutchins, who died from her injuries. The film finally released in cinemas a few weeks ago but bombed at the box office, with gross revenues of only around $27,000 worldwide, according to the industry site "Box Office Mojo."

Several civil lawsuits against Alec Baldwin and the producers, including from Hutchins' family members, remain unresolved. Meanwhile, Gutierrez-Reed's team has criticized the investigation, stating that they intend to present a more accurate understanding of the facts. In 2023, Gutierrez-Reed was indicted on a felony charge for bringing a firearm into a New Mexico bar in October 2021, resulting in 18 months of probation.

The released armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, is now under probation conditions that restrict her activities related to weapons. Despite the tragedy that occurred on the "Rust" set where Alec Baldwin's reckless actions led to the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins, Gutierrez-Reed's team is planning to present a more accurate account of the events. The case remains within the categories of accidents, cinema, and justice.
