Armed Herdsmen Pursuit Initiated by Governor Alia
Benue Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia Vows to Address Security Challenges
The governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has pledged his administration's continued commitment to tackling security concerns in the state. Speaking in the state capital, Makurdi, on the occasion of his administration's second anniversary, Alia emphasized his determination to eradicate insecurity.
Established to combat insecurity head-on, the Civil Protection Guards and Operation Anyam Nyôr have been implemented, supported by legislation. The governor explained that these forces have been instrumental in pursuing criminals, including armed herdsmen, terrorists, and bandits, with relentless determination.
Reports suggest that Alia's administration aims to expel all armed herdsmen, terrorists, and bandits from the state. The governor expressed optimism that peace would be restored when these elements are removed.
In addition to security measures, the governor highlighted financial gains resulting from civil service reforms. Through the elimination of ghost workers in the government payroll, the administration supposedly saves ₦1.2 billion monthly. This savings, Alia stated, allows for prompt payment of salaries and pensions without the need for borrowing, and has cleared some arrears dating back to September 2017.
With challenges still present, Alia promised to focus on infrastructure development, agriculture, digital investments, and supporting artisans and small businesses in the second part of his first term.
The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the APC leadership, supporters, and critics for endorsing him for re-election in 2027.
While the enforcement of security measures remains crucial in Benue State, the landscape of violence and security challenges continues to evolve.
