In July 1980, an incident involving an armed citizen named George Daubert unfolded in Dade County, Florida. According to reports by The Herald in Miami, Florida, the incident began when Daubert was awakened by pounding at his front door. It was discovered that two men were trying to break into Daubert's home. An argument ensued outside, which escalated into a fight near a highway overpass in Birmingham, Alabama. The location of the shooting was not inside the church, contrary to initial reports, but rather near a highway overpass. During the altercation, one of the intruders lunged at Daubert, prompting him to draw his revolver and order the intruders to freeze. In the ensuing struggle, Daubert shot and wounded one of the intruders. The wounded man later died at a hospital, making him the third victim in this tragic incident. The identity of the man who was attacked in his home in Dade County, Florida, and later died under unclear circumstances, remains undisclosed to the public. Another person was also involved in the argument. The shooting investigation was taken over by the state, as it occurred underneath an interstate bypass, considered state property. The county district attorney ruled the shooting a justifiable homicide, citing Daubert's actions as necessary to defend himself against the intruders. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of personal safety and the right to self-defence in such situations.
