Armed attackers target a vehicle in Manipur, resulting in the fatal shooting of two Assam Rifles soldiers and injuring five others.

In a shocking incident on February 2, 2025, the 33 Assam Rifles column was ambushed in Manipur, leaving two jawans dead and several others injured. The terrorism attack took place around 6 pm on National Highway 2 in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area. The unprovoked bout of automatic weapon fire by unidentified terrorists disrupted the routine journey of the paramilitary forces, who were heading from Imphal to Bishnupur district. The exact motive behind the terrorist attack is not specified in the report. As a result of the terrorist attack, Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap lost their lives. Five other soldiers were injured and have been evacuated to RIMS, where they are currently stable. The incident has caused deep concern among the people of Manipur, who have been experiencing deep-rooted ethnic unrest since May 2023. Thousands of families from both the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have been displaced due to the ongoing violence. Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his condolences over the ambush, stating that such acts of terrorism have no place in a peaceful and prosperous society. He also emphasised the need for swift and decisive action to apprehend the terrorists involved in the incident. Search operations are ongoing in the area to identify and capture the perpetrators of the terrorist attack. As of now, the unknown terrorists have not been publicly identified. It is important to note that Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 2025, following the resignation of N Biren Singh. The Manipur Legislative Assembly is currently in a state of suspended animation. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence in Manipur and the need for peace and stability in the region. The people of Manipur continue to hope for a resolution to the ethnic unrest and a return to normalcy.
