Deadly Attack in Central Nigeria Leaves Hundreds Dead, Villagers Cry for Protection

Local media reports around 45 deaths from a government spokesperson, but the village chief claims the actual number may be doubled. Human rights organization Amnesty International reported more than 100 deaths, in addition to injured and missing persons.
This vicious assault occurred on a Saturday morning, as armed men raided the village. Victims were either shot or burned inside their homes. The casualties include entire families with children, refugee families, and security personnel who were deployed to the region to maintain order.
The conflict between Muslim herders and Christian farming communities in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, dates back years. As climate change forces these herders to search for grazing land further south, they resort to extreme violence to drive farmers away from their lands. In return, retaliatory attacks on herders are common.
Amnesty International has sharply criticized the Nigerian government for their lack of effective response to this escalating violence. Despite widespread public outcry, reports indicate that the Nigerian authorities have consistently failed to protect the local population or address the root causes of these violent clashes.
President Bola Tinubu, who came to power two years ago with a pledge to tackle Nigeria's security issues, has yet to make substantial progress. Security remains a major problem not only in the northeast, where Boko Haram and other jihadist groups are active.
