Targeted Nightclub Attack in Damascus

Some mystery gunmen caused a stir in Damascus on May 5th, 2025. They stormed the popular Al-Karawan nightclub in the Al-Hijaz area, using automatic weapons and taking down a dancer. Multiple casualties were reported, with several people injured. The carnage left the club in a state of dis array, as gruesome footage shows.

The local authorities were quick to respond. Governor Maher Marwan unequivocally condemned the incident and vowed to track down the perpetrators. The attackers' motives remain unclear, but fears of a possible Islamist crackdown under Syria's new regime are on the rise.

An eyewitness, who asked to remain anonymous, described the horror of the scene to France Presse (AFP). Gunfire echoed in the darkness, and when it finally ceased, the witness bravely ventured into the club. They discovered a woman's lifeless body on the floor, surrounded by an unsettling pool of blood. The club was immediately shut down by security forces.

The club, situated on the ground floor of a building with several offices, has been a beacon of entertainment in Damascus for years. Known for hosting various forms of art and inviting famous artists for performances, it had been operating without incident for five years before this devastating event.

A vendor near the club told AFP that there had never been issues at the disco, even during the day. Interestingly, a car with security force agents had been parked in the vicinity for several days, watching the area.

Al-Karawan isn't the only venue experiencing violence. Just hours before, a video surfaced on social media, showing an armed group attacking another disco in the heart of Damascus. The footage, authenticated by AFP, depicted armed men assaulting both male and female patrons as they scrambled to escape.

The Ministry of the Interior reported the arrest of the attackers on Sunday, according to Al-Ekhbariya channel. However, the relation between this incident and the attack on Al-Karawan remains unclear.

Syria has faced a surge of sectarian violence in the past few days, primarily between security forces and the Druze minority. Tragically, this violence has taken the lives of over 1,700 innocent civilians, mostly Alawites.

The Druze, an ancient community believed to have origins in a branch of Islam, live not only in Syria but also primarily in Lebanon and Israel. Recent events have raised concerns of renewed sectarian conflict, following the March atrocities that targeted the Shia Alawite minority. These clashes serve as a grim reminder of the delicate security situation in Syria, which has been further complicated by regional tensions and violent incidents like the attack on Al-Karawan nightclub.
