Armed Assailant Slaughters 5 Individuals in Bangkok Market, Thailand
In a shocking incident, a mass shooting took place at the Or Tor Kor Market in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok on Monday. The shooting left six people dead, including the gunman, and two others injured.
The gunman, a 61-year-old former market employee, reportedly killed four security guards and a market vendor before taking his own life. Bang Sue deputy police chief Worapat Sukthai described the incident as a "mass shooting."
The motive for the shooting is currently unclear, and Thai police are investigating any possible links to recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. However, it is suspected that the shooting may have been due to a personal dispute involving the gunman.
The two injured women were treated at the Erawan Medical Center. Charin Gopatta, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, confirmed the total number of fatalities.
The Or Tor Kor Market is a popular fresh food market visited by locals and is situated next to the Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is popular with tourists.
This shooting is one of several deadly incidents in recent years in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others at a luxury shopping center in Bangkok’s main shopping district. In October 2022, one of Thailand’s deadliest mass shootings occurred when a dismissed police sergeant killed 36 people, including many toddlers, in Nong Bua Lamphu province. In February 2020, a disgruntled army soldier killed 29 people at a shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima before being killed by police after an 18-hour standoff.
Gun ownership in Thailand is not uncommon, despite fairly strict gun restrictions. These incidents illustrate that while Thailand generally maintains strict controls, gun violence and mass shootings, though infrequent, do occur and occasionally result in multiple casualties.
The identity of the gunman in the Or Tor Kor market shooting is currently under investigation, and the motive for the incident remains unclear. The Thai police are working diligently to gather more information and bring the perpetrator to justice.

The Or Tor Kor Market shooting on July 28, 2025, in Bangkok made headlines as a part of the growing trend of gun violence in general-news, and more specifically, crime-and-justice. The identity of the perpetrator, a former market employee, is currently under investigation, and the motive for the incident remains unclear, with a personal dispute suspected. While this incident left six fatalities, it is not the first of its kind in Thailand's recent history, highlighted by the Paragon Shopping Mall shooting in October 2023 and the Nong Bua Lamphu massacre in October 2022. These instances underscore the current state of politics within the country, as stricter regulations on gun ownership are questioned in the face of recurring mass shootings.
