Governor Tim Walz shared his cautious optimism that Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette would pull through from the brutal assault.
The ruthless assailant is said to have launched a heinous attack on his victims, disguising himself as a police officer, in the comfort of their homes in two suburbs of Minneapolis. The heartless attacker remains at large, with a massive manhunt involving hundreds of police officers in full swing.
Officials have publicly identified the suspected perpetrator as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter. This fugitive suspect has been tagged as "armed and dangerous." The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Director, Drew Evans, confirmed that the investigation into the attacker's reasons behind the brutality is still ongoing.
According to reports, the suspect's vehicle was confiscated following the horrific incident. The man, apparently employed by a private security firm, has vanished on foot.
Inside the vehicle, police uncovered flyers from anti-Trump protests, as well as a political manifesto that included the names of several politicians and officials in Minnesota.
Evans disclosed that initial police findings suggest the suspected attacker initiated the shooting at Sen. Hoffman and his wife. Over an hour and a half later, he mercilessly claimed the lives of Representative Hortman and her husband.
Law enforcement officers reportedly clashed with the suspect in a fatal gun battle near Hortman's residence, but he managed to escape.
In the aftermath, Minnesota Governor Walz aptly described the incident as an "appalling incident of targeted political violence." He stated, "Democracy thrives on civil political debates, not violence." The double-murder serves as a "gruesome reminder" of this vulnerable freedom.
Donald Trump expressed his outrage over the Minnesota shooting, labeling it as a "despicable act of violence." He added, "Such heinous attacks will not be tolerated in the United States of America."
Pam Bondi, the U.S. Attorney General and a federal prosecutor, deemed the violence as "abhorrent." She promised to utilize the "full might of the law" to track down and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Impacted by the shootings, Minneapolis authorities established a citywide curfew. This decision resulted in the cancellation of a planned anti-Trump protest event named "No Kings."
In the United States, politically charged tensions are running high. Recent months have witnessed numerous attacks on politicians. During the 2024 presidential campaign, a man armed with a gun attacked a then-republican presidential candidate and Trump supporter. In April 2025, an arson attack was carried out on the residence of Pennsylvania Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro. In 2022, the husband of then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was attacked with a hammer in their home and left critically injured.
