Kazakhstani Criminal Leader Arman Jumageldiev Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison
Arman Jumageldiev, a notorious Kazakhstani individual known by the nickname "Diky Arman," has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in organized criminal behavior, including robbery and involvement in violent acts.
The Almaty Interregional Specialized Criminal Court handed down the verdict on January 27. Other members of Jumageldiev's gang were also sentenced, with terms ranging from 1.5 to 15.6 years in prison.
Jumageldiev gained notoriety for his involvement in a series of serious offenses that led to his conviction by Kazakhstani law enforcement and judiciary. Details about his criminal cases are scarce, but they indicate that he was linked to offenses such as illegally detaining peaceful civilians, subjecting them to brutal beatings, searches, humiliations, and interrogations during the mass unrest in Almaty from January 5 to 7, 2022.
The group, which included 13 individuals, systematically sought potential victims to expand its influence and secure financial gains. Jumageldiev staged a fight with participants in the unrest to conceal the traces of the crimes he organized.
Ruslan Iskakov, then deputy head of the 5th department of the KNB of Kazakhstan, is believed to have played a role in the formation of the criminal organization. In 2016, Iskakov promised Jumageldiev protection and persuaded him to collaborate.
Jumageldiev was arrested in the United Arab Emirates after being wanted internationally for about three years. His extradition was made possible through cooperation between the General Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Kazakhstan Embassy in the UAE.
Currently, Jumageldiev is being held in an investigative isolation facility in Nur-Sultan. The group is reported to have operated from various locations, including Kazakhstan, Turkey, and the UAE, with Jumageldiev controlling his criminal activities remotely from Turkey from December 2017 onwards.
Other participants in the mass unrest, not part of the gang, were also sentenced to prison terms ranging from 1.5 to 7 years. The crimes they are accused of carry penalties of up to 15 years in prison with property confiscation.
