Arlington Voters Give a Thumbs-Up to All Five Bond Proposals

Voters in Arlington made history on Saturday, committing to every single bond proposal on the ballot. Even the one with the least support – Proposition D, focused on upgrades to city administration buildings – received an impressive 57% yes votes.

All other proposals garnered the support of at least 70% of voters, with these top priorities taking center stage: streets, public safety, and parks.

Andrew Piel, council member for District 4, had expressed concern that voters might reject Proposition D ahead of a council retreat on April 29.

According to City Manager Trey Yelverton, the projects approved by the voters are high on the priority list for many Arlington residents. Interestingly, the city doesn't anticipate any hikes in property taxes as a result.

"When you're rebuilding Randol Mill, it's not about planting some new flowers," Yelverton admitted. "It's akin to buying a new house – you won't pay cash for that, and we're not going to shell out a fortune to build a brand new road."

Most of the bond funds are earmarked for street rebuilds and maintenance, totaling just under $137 million. Almost $50 million goes towards public safety upgrades, with improvements to parks, libraries, and city hall together accounting for $14.8 million.

Issuing bonds, essentially taking out loans, is a common practice among cities. Thanks to Arlington's AAA bond rating, the city qualifies for the best available interest rates, meaning taxes need not increase to fund these improvements.
