Arkha's Reindeer Festival Adapts After Snow Cancels Iconic Sled Races

Arkha village is set to host its annual Reindeer Herder's Day festival on March 28. This year's event marks two special occasions: Russia's Year of National Unity and the 100th anniversary of Okhotsky District. However, heavy snow from a recent cyclone has forced organisers to cancel a key attraction—the reindeer sled races.

The festival will go ahead despite the weather disruption. Northernathlon competitions, such as narwhal jumps and traditional wrestling, will take place as planned. A fashion show will showcase handmade costumes, while an exhibition of local crafts will run alongside.

For the first time, a bilingual dictation in Even and Russian has been added to the programme. The activity aims to celebrate the region's linguistic heritage. Travel to Arkha remains difficult due to deep snow, blocking routes from other parts of Okhotsky District. Svetlana Levina, head of the Okhotsky branch of the Regional Assembly of Indigenous Peoples of the North, confirmed that herders cannot bring their reindeer teams. As a result, the sled races—a festival staple—have been called off.

The event will now focus on cultural and sporting activities instead of reindeer competitions. Organisers have adjusted the schedule to keep the festival running smoothly. Visitors can still expect traditional performances, crafts, and new language-based events.
