Arina Sobolenko advances in the opening round of Roland Garros tournament.
In the ongoing French Open at Roland Garros, taking place in Paris from May 25 to June 8, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus overcame Swiss player Jil Teichmann, ranked 97th in the WTA, with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory in the round of 64. The match concluded in 1 hour and 19 minutes.
Sabalenka's service keyed the win, recording 2 aces, but also making 4 double faults. She converted 5 of her 8 break point opportunities and will meet Serbian Olga Danilovic, ranked 34th, in the second round. Danilovic justified her No. 34 ranking by ousting American Danielle Collins, ranked 54th, in the previous round, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Unfortunately for the Belarusian team in the doubles event, Victoria Azarenka, ranked 75th, and her partner Erin Routliffe from New Zealand, ranked 747, were eliminated in the first round by the Italian pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. The Italian duo, ranked 176th and 4th, respectively, secured their victory with a 2-6, 3-6 triumph in 1 hour and 21 minutes. In the next round, the Italians will square off against Lulu Sun from New Zealand and Yuan Yue from China.
The French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, is the only Grand Slam event played on clay courts. The titleholders of the men's and women's singles championships will claim a prize of €2,550,000, with runners-up earning €1,275,000 each. Polish player Iga Świątek, who defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini in last year's final, currently holds the women's title.
