Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga receive the highest accolades at the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony.
The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) returned for another spectacular show in 2023, airing live on CBS and MTV. This year's event was filled with memorable moments, captivating performances, and heartfelt speeches.
Pop sensation Ariana Grande took home multiple awards, including the coveted Video of the Year for "Brighter Days Ahead." In her acceptance speech, she thanked her father for acting in the video. Apart from this, she also won the Best Pop prize.
Sabrina Carpenter shone brightly at the VMAs, winning the award for Best Album for her release "Short n' Sweet." The win came as no surprise as the album has been a critical and commercial success. Carpenter dedicated her win to her 16-year-old self, expressing her gratitude for her journey so far.
Rose, a member of Blackpink, also dedicated her VMA win to her younger self. Her group's collaboration with Bruno Mars, "APT.," won the VMA for Song of the Year.
Lady Gaga, who is currently on tour with her album Mayhem, was crowned Artist of the Year. This win prevented Beyoncé and Taylor Swift from emerging as the most honoured artist in VMA history, as they both remain tied at 30 awards each. Gaga thanked her fans for rewarding her as an artist and expressed her gratitude for their continued support.
In addition to the music awards, the VMAs also honoured some of the industry's legends. Mariah Carey received a Lifetime Achievement award. In her speech, she spoke about the fun of making music videos and their role as "mini movies" and "an excuse to bring the drama."
The ceremony also featured a musical tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, with English singer Yungblud performing "Crazy Train." Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry joined for a performance of "Mama, I'm Coming Home."
Folk-pop singer Alex Warren was named Best New Artist, marking the start of a promising career in the music industry.
The VMAs, which began airing on MTV in 1984, are known for their iconic moments. This year was no exception, with Lady Gaga thanking fans for a collaboration win and preventing Beyoncé and Swift from breaking the record for the most honoured artist. Some of the memorable moments included Gaga's raw meat dress and Madonna and Britney Spears' onstage kiss.
Overall, the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 was a night to remember, filled with music, performances, and tributes to some of the industry's greatest artists.
