Corona Satire 'Eddington': A Small Town Descends into Chaos - Ari Aster’s *Eddington* Exposes a Town’s Unraveling Chaos and Division

Ari Aster’s latest film, Eddington, blends satire, political drama, and thriller in a chaotic small-town setting. The story unfolds during the COVID-19 pandemic, where tensions erupt over mask mandates, racial justice, and a divisive data centre project. At the heart of the turmoil stands Sheriff Joe Cross, played by Joaquin Phoenix, a man barely holding his life together.

The fictional town of Eddington becomes a powder keg when its youth organise Black Lives Matter protests. The town’s only Black resident, Officer Michael, finds himself at the centre of the unrest. Meanwhile, Sheriff Joe Cross clashes with Mayor Ted Garcia over mask mandates and the controversial data centre, sparking political warfare.

The film leaves Eddington in disarray, with unresolved investigations and deep divisions. Sheriff Joe Cross remains isolated, his personal and professional struggles unresolved. Eddington offers no neat resolutions—only a stark portrait of a community torn apart by its own contradictions.
