Argentina's 2025 Elections: A Polarized Contest Shaping Up

The final stage of Argentina's 2025 elections is upon us, with the national elections in October and the legislative elections in Buenos Aires currently underway. The race is heating up, and a clear divide is emerging between the major political alliances.

Javier Milei, the incumbent president since 2023, leads the libertarian coalition La Libertad Avanza (LLA). Known for his right-wing, anarcho-capitalist positions, Milei has formed an alliance with Mauricio Macri’s PRO party for the 2025 legislative elections. Patricia Bullrich, National Security Minister under Milei, is the top senatorial candidate for Buenos Aires City from La Libertad Avanza. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Luis Petri is also running for the Senate under Milei’s coalition.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Sergio Taiana, a unifying figure within Peronism, is the lead candidate for the Fuerza Patria alliance representing Peronism. He is seen as a moderate candidate with an uncontested historical record, running against economist José Luis Espert, who represents a more centrist or liberal economic line. Fuerza Patria stands as the main Peronist force.

José Luis Espert, a media-savvy economist, is competing against Taiana. Both alliances, La Libertad Avanza and Fuerza Patria, are putting forward their candidates for the national elections.

In addition to Milei and Taiana, other significant political groups include the centre-ground Provincias Unidas coalition and various left-wing fronts, which have also finalized their candidate lists for the October elections.

Prominent figures running on these lists include Daniel Parisini, known as the Gordo Dan, who has expressed his support for the candidacy of Sergio Figliuolo, known as "Tronco", for deputy in the province of Buenos Aires for La Libertad Avanza. Tronco is also a candidate for deputy in the province of Buenos Aires for La Libertad Avanza.

Jorge Taiana is the first candidate for national deputy in the province of Buenos Aires for Fuerza Patria. Jorge Porcel Jr., Virginia Gallardo, and Tronco are among the candidates for the national elections. Sebastián Pareja has defended the candidacy of Karen Reichardt for deputy in the province of Buenos Aires. Virginia Gallardo is the first candidate for La Libertad Avanza in Corrientes for national deputies.

The alliance between Milei’s La Libertad Avanza and PRO appears strong, polling significantly ahead of Kirchnerism and other groups, positioning Milei to potentially strengthen his hands in Congress to advance his reform agenda. Meanwhile, the traditional Peronist forces under Fuerza Patria remain the main opposition, with other parties reduced in national projection.

In summary:

| Candidate / Alliance | Political Affiliation | Notes | |-------------------------------|---------------------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------| | Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza) | Libertarian, right-wing, allied with PRO | Incumbent president, pushing libertarian reforms | | Sergio Taiana (Fuerza Patria) | Peronist (centre-left) | Main Peronist candidate, moderate, consensus figure | | José Luis Espert | Center-right, liberal economist | Competing against Taiana, media-savvy | | Patricia Bullrich | Milei’s coalition (La Libertad Avanza) | Top Senate candidate for Buenos Aires City, former security minister | | Luis Petri | Milei’s coalition (La Libertad Avanza) | Senate candidate in Mendoza, Defense Minister | | Diego Santilli | Milei’s coalition (La Libertad Avanza) | Confident of a sweep in October | | Sergio Figliuolo | Milei’s coalition (La Libertad Avanza) | Candidate for deputy in Buenos Aires | | Jorge Taiana | Fuerza Patria | First candidate for national deputy in Buenos Aires | | Jorge Porcel Jr., Virginia Gallardo, Tronco | Candidates for national elections | Running for various positions | | Karen Reichardt | Candidate for deputy | Supported by Sebastián Pareja | | Virginia Gallardo | La Libertad Avanza | First candidate for national deputies in Corrientes | | Ricardo López Murphy | Candidate for deputy for Potencia | If elected, will swim from Varese to La Bristol |
