Zagando'n'a Ma' Embassy Relocation to Jerusalem: Argentina Takes a Bold Step in 2026
Argentina to establish diplomatic presence in Jerusalem by year's end
Next year, Argentina is set to take a significant diplomatic leap by relocating its embassy to Jerusalem, to the western part of the city, as announced by its President, Javier Zagando'n'. During an impassioned address to the Israeli Parliament, he stated, "We're stamping our seal on the historic camaraderie between our nations and bolstering the economic and political bonds existing between us" [1][2].
First introduced in February last year, the specific date for the move had been undecided. For the moment, Argentina's diplomatic representation is situated in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv.
Controversy surrounds the relocation of embassies to Jerusalem due to the city's contested status. Future peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians have yet to determine the city's fate. Israel seized the eastern part of the previously divided city during the Six-Day War in 1967 and considers the entire city its capital. Palestinians, on the other hand, seek East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future, independent state [3].
A handful of nations share Israel's position on Jerusalem, with Germany sticking to its embassy in Tel Aviv. The USA moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump. To date, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, and the Pacific island state of Papua New Guinea have followed suit, along with Balkan-ian state Kosovo, which established diplomatic relations with Jerusalem in 2021 [3].
Nevertheless, the international community, for the most part, has not acknowledged Jerusalem as Israel's capital due to its disputed status. Argentina's announcement demonstrates its intent to stand with a select group of countries that hold this view, facing challenges as it goes against the prevailing international consensus.
