Javier Milei Announces Argentina's Embassy Move to Jerusalem: A Political Shift in Relations with Israel

Argentina relocates its embassy to Jerusalem in the year to come

Gearing up for a significant diplomatic shift, Argentine President Javier Milei revealed plans to relocate his country's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem next year. During his recent address to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, Milei stated that the move aims to honor their historical friendship and fortify the economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Previously, Milei had declared his intention to move the embassy to Jerusalem back in 2022, but the exact date has yet to be set. Currently, Argentina's diplomatic representation is based in Herzliya near Tel Aviv.

Moves of embassies to Jerusalem are often sources of international controversy, given the unresolved status of the city in future peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. Israel captured the eastern part of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967 and claims the entire city as its capital, while Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

So far, few nations share Israel's stance on this issue. Notable exceptions include the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, and the Pacific island state of Papua New Guinea, as well as Kosovo, which established diplomatic relations with Israel and opened its embassy in Jerusalem in 2021.

Milei's announcement showcases his unwavering pro-Israel stance as a moral imperative and a political statement. He emphasized Argentina's condensation of antisemitism and stressed the country's solidarity with Israel, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts such as the war against Hamas in Gaza. Milei's address carried undertones of an ideological battle, comparing Israel's resilience and accomplishments to global antisemitism and terrorism.

Criticizing parts of the international community for what he views as manipulation by terrorists, Milei expressed Argentina's demand for the release of hostages held by Hamas, including Argentinians. Milei, in his second official visit to Israel since his election in 2023, received positive responses from Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Knesset officials, who admired his bold stance and support for Israel.

However, it is essential to note that this diplomatic shift is still in the works, with the implementation scheduled for 2026. The move aligns Argentina with a select group of countries that officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a contentious issue due to Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem not being internationally recognized, and Palestinians considering East Jerusalem a future capital.
