New, Strict Traffic Laws in Denmark Cutting Down on Reckless Driving

Since Denmark introduced tougher penalties for dangerous driving, the number of police charges for severe reckless driving has plummeted, according to data from the National Police (Rigspolitiet).
A Hard Fist for Reckless Wheelers
In 2024, only 876 charges for reckless driving were made compared to 1,299 in 2022, a decrease of almost a third. This drop occurred in the first full year of the new legislation, which took effect in March 2021.
The updated rules cover aggravated forms of reckless driving, often referred to as "crazy driving" (vanvidskørsel). Reckless drivers now face harsher penalties for violations that result in involuntary manslaughter or bodily harm due to neglect, as well as for deliberate endangerment of others through reckless driving.
Other transgressions leading to charges under the aggravated reckless driving laws include driving more than 100 percent above the speed limit if it exceeds 100 km/h, driving more than 200 km/h regardless of the speed limit, driving with a blood alcohol content above 2.0, and for "exceptionally reckless driving."
In 2021, the rules regarding vehicle confiscation were also adjusted, allowing police to seize a car from a reckless driver, even if they aren't the owner, such as in cases where the vehicle is borrowed or rented. If approved by a judge, the police can permanently confiscate and auction off the vehicle, benefiting the Danish Treasury.
Behind the Numbers
National Police spokesperson Christian Berthelsen attributed the decline in reckless driving charges to several factors, including strict penalties and increased public awareness of the law. The number of charges following accidents caused by reckless driving has also decreased over the years[1].
As of October 2023, the total number of charges under the law since it went into effect in 2021 was 3,965. Approximately 90 percent of charges were pressed against men, and over a quarter of all drivers charged were foreign nationals[2]. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, and Ukraine were the countries with the most charges, though Danes composed the majority of charged motorists overall.
