The Germans as Economic Refugees - ARD Revives 2019 Immigration Epic *The Master Butchers Singing Club* in Late-Night Slot

German broadcaster ARD will replay the 2019 immigration epic The Master Butchers Singing Club as a late-night feature. The film, based on Louise Erdrich’s 2003 novel, stars Jonas Nay and Aylin Tezel in a sweeping Western that reimagines German settlers as outsiders in a diverse land. Viewers can also stream it on the ARD media library from December 18.

The three-hour saga follows Fidelis Waldvogel, a young Swabian butcher who leaves Germany for the American Wild West after World War I. Seeking fortune, he brings his wife, Eva, and her infant—the child of his fallen comrade—across the Atlantic.

ARD’s late-night broadcast and media library release will give audiences another chance to experience this ambitious adaptation. The film’s exploration of displacement and connection remains as relevant today as when it first premiered in 2019.
