Arctic freeze grips southern Germany with record-low temperatures this weekend

A bitter cold snap is sweeping across southern Germany this weekend. Arctic air from the north will push temperatures well below freezing, with some areas facing extreme lows. The icy conditions are expected to create hazardous travel and sharp overnight frosts.

The deep freeze is being driven by a high-pressure system pulling polar air into the region. In Reutlingen, an 'ice day' is forecast for Saturday, with daytime highs struggling to rise above 0°C. Nighttime temperatures could plummet to -11°C (12°F), while the Swabian Alb will see daytime highs of just -3°C (27°F).

Clear skies on Friday and Saturday will allow temperatures to drop even further overnight. Without cloud cover, heat will escape rapidly, worsening the frost. Black ice is likely to form in the evenings, increasing risks on roads and pavements.

Stuttgart will experience a slightly milder but still cold weekend. Cloudy and rainy weather is expected, with morning lows near -6°C and daytime highs around 2°C on Sunday. Rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain, will arrive later in the day, accompanied by winds up to 20 km/h. Snow is unlikely on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday’s precipitation could bring a messy mix of wintry conditions.

A gradual warming trend is forecast for next week, though nights will remain frosty. Daytime temperatures should climb above freezing, offering some relief from the weekend’s deep chill. Until then, residents are advised to prepare for icy roads and sharply cold nights.
