Archery club honors distant milestone of 50-year-old member in Baden-Baden
Baden-Baden Archery Club Thrives in picturesque Leisberg Quarry
Nestled in the heart of Germany, the Baden-Baden Archery Club calls the serene Leisberg quarry its home. Founded in 1975 by 20 passionate enthusiasts, the club has since grown and flourished, offering a tranquil and inspiring environment for archers of all ages and skill levels.
The quarry, known as Leisberg II, was chosen for its ideal safety conditions, distances for training and tournaments, and secure long-term usage. Its red rock walls, surrounded by pines, firs, and spruces, provide an idyllic setting for the club. The longitudinal axis of the quarry runs almost exactly north-south, offering optimal lighting conditions at all times of the day.
During winter, training takes place in Ebersteinburg with 13 targets allowing simultaneous shooting. Archers, including retirees and housewives, often meet in the mornings at Ebersteinburg for winter training. The club's members can use the Leisberg range whenever they wish, ensuring ample opportunities for practice.
The club's current chairman, Gerd Astor, developed his passion for archery at the age of twelve after witnessing a demonstration of archers. Astor, a multiple German champion, recently won third place at the state championships. He finds absolute relaxation in archery, as it allows him complete concentration and technical skill in a dreamlike natural oasis.
After a low point following the death of its first chairman, Fritz Ernst, the club was rebuilt by committed members, including Astor. Today, the club maintains a good position in all respects and still hosts the annual district championship with around 70 participants, including many sportswomen.
The Baden-Baden Archery Club also cooperates well with the forest and offers taster courses and loan bows for initial use. Official training times are Thursdays from 7 pm and Saturdays from 2 pm, with free shooting every Sunday. The club hosts events to introduce people to archery, making it accessible and engaging for newcomers.
Archery is possible well into old age, as promoted by Gerd Astor. The peaceful and focused nature of the sport makes it an appealing activity for those seeking relaxation and mental clarity. The club's commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment ensures that archery remains a beloved pastime in Baden-Baden for many years to come.
Archery enthusiasts might also find interest in other sports offered within the club, catering to diverse interests. The Baden-Baden Archery Club, beyond its main focus, aspires to nurture a community of sports lovers.
