Scoop up a piece of history, y’all! Archaeologists have struck gold...er, bronze, in the district of Weilheim-Schongau. They've unearthed artifacts dating back thousands of years. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments revealed several urn burials from the late Bronze Age, along with some other goodies.
Tucked between Pähl, nearing Lake Ammersee, and Wilzhofen, archaeologists discovered remnants of vessels used as urns in those days. One grave even contained an old-school sword. The Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation had spilled the beans about this exciting find!
The unveilings provide a fascinating glimpse into the settlement history of the Weilheim basin, according to the State Office. Indeed, the area has yielded several Bronze Age graves boasting flashy artifacts, prehistoric settlement evidence, and even a section of an obscure Roman road. Right nearby, a Roman long-distance road ran through Weilheim, connecting Italy to Augsburg via the Brenner Pass.
To secure these early wonders before the planned expansion of the federal highway B2, a specialized company was called in to dig up the dirt. The excavations spanned over two kilometers along the B2.
The archaeological digs are wrapped up, the findings safely stowed and documented. This means the way is now clear for construction to continue, as per the State Office. The burial mound has been known for a while, with archaeological investigations taking place there in the 19th century.
