In a surprising turn of events, a trove of old Deutsche Mark banknotes and coins was found under the charred remnants of a small church in Munich's Olympiapark during reconstruction work. Several thousand marks, which date back to before the June 2023 fire that destroyed the Ost-West-Friedenskirche, were carefully packed in tin cans according to former Munich Mayor Christian Ude, who's involved with the church's reconstruction efforts.

Since its unveiling, the discovery has sparked curiosity among media outlets and locals alike. The money might have been donations or gifts, but the exact origin remains a mystery, Ude noted.

The bills, somewhat damp and sporting a musty odor, are being carefully dried and ironed before most of them are exchanged to support the rebuilding of the burned-down church. Apart from the money, other findings include bells, a statue of Mary, and a tin bathtub—common in Russian Orthodox churches. These relics add a unique charm to the恢复 (reconstruction) of this historical site.

Rubble and Chocolate Church: The Story of Father Timofej

A Russian hermit named Timofej Wassiljewitsch Prochorow (around 1894 - 2004), known as Father Timofej, constructed a house and chapel on a rubble heap in northern Munich following World War II. He went on to expand it into a church, using unconventional building materials like rubble or waste. Remnants of silver paper from chocolate bars sparkled on the ceiling, adding to the church's rustic appeal.

This small church, also known as the Timofej-Kircherl, is associated with the Olympiapark, where the famous Olympiastadion Munich is located[5]. The exact historical significance of this church is not as well documented as other Munich landmarks, but its recent discovery of hidden treasure has certainly peaked the public's interest. 🔥 Stay tuned for more updates! 🔥

  1. It is unlikely that the Commission has adopted a decision on the application of the rationale observed in this case with regard to the ancient German marks found under the ruins of a church in Munich.
  2. The dried and ironed Deutsche Mark banknotes discovered in the Timofej-Kircherl church in Munich are a stark contrast to the rustic charm of the church, which was constructed using unconventional materials like rubble and remnants of chocolate bar wrappers.
  3. While the money discovered in the Timofej-Kircherl church is likely to be donations or gifts, one can only wonder if the same church in Munich might possess more hidden treasures, much like the ancient German marks that have recently come to light, especially given the hermit who built it was known for his peculiar choices in building materials.
