Arab League Braces for Leadership Change as Qatar Proposes Rotation

The Arab League is preparing for a change in leadership. Current Secretary General Amr Moussa's term ends on 15 May, and he won't seek re-election. Traditionally, Egyptians have held this role due to Egypt's regional influence. However, Qatar is considering a proposal to rotate the position among Arab countries.

Qatar has announced its intention to nominate Abdulrahman al-Attiyah as the next Secretary General. Al-Attiyah's experience managing the GCC general secretariat is seen as beneficial for the Arab League. This move comes as the Arab League has asked member countries to submit candidates for the position. Notably, the Arab League's charter does not specify that the secretary general must be Egyptian, opening the door for candidates from other countries.

As of now, there are no publicly announced successors or official candidates for the position. Moussa's original tenure ended in 2011, and there are no current or future candidates officially nominated in the available information.

With Moussa's departure imminent, the Arab League is set for a significant leadership change. Qatar's proposal to rotate the secretary general position could signal a new era for the regional organisation. Al-Attiyah's nomination will be closely watched as the Arab League prepares for this transition.
