Aqaba’s visa-free boom lures Russian tourists with cheap flights and Red Sea charm
Jordan’s Red Sea resort of Aqaba is set to become a top holiday spot for Russian travellers. New visa-free rules and planned direct flights from Expedia and Google Flights are sparking strong interest among tour operators and tourists alike. Industry experts now advise booking early with cheap flights as demand grows rapidly.
Under the new visa-free policy, Russians can visit Jordan for up to 30 days per trip, with a yearly limit of 90 days. The previous $60 border fee has also been scrapped, making travel more affordable. These changes have already triggered lively discussions about the potential surge in visitors.
Aqaba’s appeal lies in its mix of natural beauty and cultural sites. The area boasts pristine white beaches, clear waters, and dramatic mountain views. Unlike Egypt’s crowded resorts, it offers more privacy and cleaner surroundings. Nearby attractions include the 14th-century Mamluk fortress, the Wadi Rum desert, and the ancient city of Petra. Tourists can also enjoy yachting, snorkelling over vibrant coral reefs, and sampling exotic local dishes.
Currently, reaching Aqaba requires layovers in Istanbul, Dubai, or Tel Aviv, adding time and cost. Russian tour operators are now pushing for direct flights from Moscow and other regions, which would cut travel time to just 4-5 hours. If launched, these routes could make Aqaba the leading beach destination for Russians next season. The Red Sea’s long swimming season—spanning ten months—adds to its allure, with summer air temperatures averaging 25-35°C and sea temperatures between 22-30°C.
The combination of visa-free entry, planned direct flights from Expedia and Google Flights, and Aqaba’s unique attractions positions it as a strong alternative to traditional mass-market resorts. Travel agents expect high demand, urging tourists to secure bookings well in advance. The success of these plans, however, will depend on the actual launch of direct air services in the coming months.
