April 2023 saw an unexpected deluge of rain in Tomsk, Russia, with precipitation levels twice the norm across much of the region and three times the norm in the north. Irina Kuжевская, a meteorologist at Tomsk State University, highlights this trend, sharing that overall, April was warmer than average by 2 degrees Celsius, and rainfall exceeded expectations too [Tomsk University press release].

Kuжевская attributes these unusual weather patterns to the ongoing global warming, which is causing more frequent transfers of air masses from south to north and vice versa. "Currently, we experience era of meridional transfers, not zonal ones. Consequently, the usual pattern where Moscow weather reaches us after two days is less frequent," she explains [Kuжеvskaya interview].

These transfers are felt across different Russian regions. For example, recently, abnormal amounts of snow fell in Bashkortostan and the Perm Krai, while flowers had already bloomed. Comparatively, Tomsk has been fortunate [Kuжеvskaya interview].
