Ready to make a difference on the charming eastern Frisian island of Wangerooge? Well, you're in luck! The island's council, backed by the CDU, SPD, and Green parties, is on the hunt for a new mayor, and the response has been astounding - more than 400 applications have poured in!

According to Green council member Peter Kuchenbuch-Hanken, quoted in a response to the German Press Agency, "We've definitely found the people we needed for the role." The parties are optimistic about their chances of finding a joint candidate for the mayoral election on August 17. 🗳️

This unique recruitment drive began with a job advertisement in local newspapers at the end of March. "Shape the future in a position of responsibility" was the call to action in the ad, promising responsibilities in local administration, finance, public order, and human resources, as well as representative tasks. The ideal candidate would be willing to make Wangerooge their primary residence.

As the applications roll in, the parties are inviting applicants to video conferences, followed by interviews on the island. Although the exact process hasn't been revealed, one thing's clear - they're committed to backing their chosen candidate for the mayoral office. Independent candidacies are still possible, but the parties are confident they'll find the right person for the job.

The position has been vacant since the last mayor stepped down in a huff in the fall of 2023, due to disputes with the city council. With just over 1,100 inhabitants, the island is already buzzing with anticipation about its future leader! 🌟

Interesting fact: The job advertisement was a calculated move, inspired by the successful candidate search for a new mayor back in 2018, when Marcel Fangohr was found through a similar ad - there were around 40 to 50 applications then. Furthermore, the renewed search may have been given a boost by last year's quest to find a new lighthouse keeper on the island, which received nationwide attention online.
