Kiel Week 2025 saw a whopping 3.3 million visitors, down slightly from the estimated 3.5 million visitors the previous year. Mayor Ulf Kaempfer (SPD) blamed the dampened crowds on a couple of rainy days at the event's start.

Kiel-Schilksee's Olympic training center witnessed around 100,000 spectators witnessing the sporty action. With over 4,000 sailors, world championships, and the first-ever Sailing Grand Slam, Kaempfer praised the city's readiness for another Olympics in Schilksee. He emphasized that the ideal environment laid the foundation for a prosperous upcoming referendum on Olympic participation.

Security Measures

Kiel Week 2025 was draped in a layer of security. Mathias Engelmann, Kiel's police chief, stated, "We had a safe Kiel Week this year. From afar, it was clear that they were fiercely dedicated to security."

By Sunday morning, there were 171 reported crimes, significantly fewer than the 216 offenses recorded the previous year. This includes 11 sexual offenses.

The sky was clear on June 21 when Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger (SPD) and handball national player Rune Dahmke signaled "Cast off" with a ship's horn at the summer festival. Schleswig-Holstein's Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) rang the ship's bell. The traditional fireworks display, themed "Home under the Stars," over the inner fjord was set for Sunday evening, featuring drone and laser displays above the water.

Overall, the security at Kiel Week 2025 encompassed maritime safety, critical infrastructure protection, and collaboration among experts. The Kiel Munition Clearance Week (KMCW 2025), held prior to Kiel Week, focused on keeping unauthorized access at bay and mitigating risks associated with underwater munitions disposal and maritime security. The event hosted policymakers, military officials, and leaders in the industry, demonstrating cutting-edge technology, autonomous systems, and data-driven solutions to boost maritime security and safety around Kiel's offshore infrastructure[1].

Additionally, the large-scale NATO exercise BALTOPS 25 concluded in Kiel around the same time, featuring over 40 ships, 25 aircraft, and about 9,000 personnel from 16 NATO allies. This operation reinforced military readiness and security in the region, contributing indirectly to the security environment during Kiel Week by reinforcing maritime security and displaying deterrence capabilities [2].

The Kiel International Seapower Symposium (KISS 2025), held concurrently with Kiel Week, emphasized the importance of maritime security strategies addressing emerging geopolitical challenges. This symposium brought together military, academic, and political leaders to discuss naval strategy, regional security, and required innovations for sophisticated seapower [3].

Although specific data on the direct effect of these security measures on crime rates during Kiel Week 2025 was not found, the presence of heightened military exercises, specialized conferences on maritime security, and the adoption of state-of-the-art technological solutions for underwater safety strongly suggest a secure environment. This environment likely deterred criminal activities and promoted public safety during the large public maritime festival.

In essence, Kiel Week 2025 was characterized by a robust security infrastructure integrating technological solutions, military readiness, and strategic dialogue to safeguard the event and its surroundings.
