Long-standing comeback and renewed popularity: Over 250,000 vehicles in Thuringia still carry the classic license plates based on the old car plate codes from 2012.

Nearly a quarter-million 'Nostalgia' license plates distributed in Thuringia - Approximately 225,000 instances of longing for the past found in Thuringia.

Approximately 225,000 vehicles in the German state of Thuringia bear so-called "historic" or "old" license plates, according to the Statistical State Office. These plates, which feature former city and district abbreviations, are incorporated in the license plate liberalization and appear on one in six vehicles in the state.

Currently, there are around 1.52 million registered vehicles in Thuringia. Among them, the Ilm district boasts the highest proportion of vehicles with these vintage license plates. Out of some 74,255 registered vehicles—which encompass cars, motorcycles, and trucks and trailers—28,798 display the old license plates "IL" for Ilmenau or "ARN" for Arnstadt. This represents a sharing of 38.8 percent.

The Unstrut-Hainich district comes in second place, with the old license plate codes "MHL" (Mühlhausen) and "LSZ" (Langensalza), introduced in 2012. The Saale-Orla district follows closely behind, with a 34.7 percent share for the old plates "PN" (Pößneck), "LBS" (Lobenstein), and "SCZ" (Schleiz).

At the opposite end of the list is the Weimar region, where vintage plates, represented by the abbreviation "APD" for Apolda, are found on 7,153 out of a total of 65,473 license plates, equating to a share of 10.9 percent.

While no specific statistics or comparative data are available on traffic conditions associated with "historic" license plates across different districts in Thuringia, it is worth noting that these plates are typically issued only for vehicles classified as historic or of particular interest. These usually belong to older vehicles and are well-preserved, and the number of such plates in Thuringia would vary by district depending on local interest in classic vehicles and vehicle demographics.

For detailed information regarding the prevalence of "historic" license plates in Thuringia, the Thuringian vehicle registration authorities or statistical offices would be the best sources to consult. They can offer breakdowns of registration types and categories, district by district.

The community policy in Thuringia may need to address the high number of vehicles with historic license plates, as they are more prevalent in certain districts like Ilm, Unstrut-Hainich, and Saale-Orla. These vintage vehicles, often classified as historic or of particular interest, might require special employment policies in terms of regulations and benefits for their ownership and maintenance. Moreover, considering the unique lifestyle these classic car owners might lead, involving sports and specific car-related activities, it's important for employment policies to be flexible and accommodate such interests.
