Approaching thundershowers kick off the summer season.
Heavy Thunderstorms Forecast for Weekend Across Central and Southern Germany
Offenbach, Germany - Following the bridge day, heavy thunderstorms are expected to hit central and southern regions of Germany this weekend, according to the German Weather Service (DWD). Temperatures will rise above 30 degrees Celsius, making it muggy, before the impending storms. The meteorological start of summer falls on June 1. Although summer officially begins on June 21 according to the calendar, the atmospheric conditions suggest otherwise.
On Saturday, temperatures may reach up to 31 degrees Celsius in the southwest, with increasing humidity and electrically charged air. Meteorologist Tobias Reinartz of DWD predicts that the storms will initially appear in the western regions before spreading to the center and continuing eastwards throughout the day. This could lead to severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts. Locally, flooding, flooded basements, and uprooted trees are possible, warns Reinartz.
On Sunday, the southeast and eastern halves of Germany are anticipated to be the new focus for thunderstorms. The western and northwestern regions should see a calming of weather conditions. The DWD expert forecasts that the upcoming week will remain unsettled, with frequent shower and thunderstorm activity. Temperatures are expected to drop back slightly.
Although no specific thunderstorm forecast for Offenbach, Germany, has been detailed, the broader Hesse region is anticipated to experience some volatile weather conditions until June 1, 2025[2]. In neighboring Frankfurt, temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 26°C on June 1, with showers changing to sunny intervals by late morning[3]. The following days are predicted to have a mix of sunny intervals and partly cloudy conditions, with daytime temperatures ranging from 22°C to 26°C and nighttime temperatures from 14°C to 18°C[3].
