Ready for a packed week in Wiesbaden?

Next week, the state parliament in Wiesbaden is gearing up for an action-packed schedule from Tuesday to Thursday. Multiple bills from the state government are on the docket, including a notable plan to ban mobile phones in schools.

On Tuesday afternoon, Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) will talk about "Growth and Investments for Hesse" in a government statement. The AfD faction will make another attempt to elect one of their members as deputy president of the state parliament during the evening.

Defense and Constitution Upgrades on the Table

Wednesday will be dedicated to discussing Hesse's contribution to Germany's defense policy and a reform of the Hessian State Constitution Protection Act. The latter became necessary due to the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe ruling some provisions as unconstitutional in 2024. This included mobile phone tracking and undercover agents.

Later in the day, the reform of the state building code will be under discussion as the state government aims to boost housing construction. Easing constructing requirements for parking spaces and approvals for subsequent roof extensions for additional apartments are part of the plans.

A New Finance State Secretary and Anti-Semitism Commissioner to Lead the Audit Office

Wednesday evening will see the election of Hesse's finance state secretary and anti-Semitism commissioner Uwe Becker (CDU) as the new president of the state audit office. There have been disputes between the government and the opposition over this appointment.

Say Goodbye to Smartphones in Class?

The final day of the plenary session – Thursday – will be focused on the planned ban on mobile phones in Hesse’s schools. From August, students will not be allowed to use smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches for personal use. Exceptions may be made for older students.

Hesse, like many other regions, faces challenges in increasing housing supply to meet growing demand, particularly in major cities like Frankfurt. Efforts to boost housing construction involve streamlining approval processes, promoting modern construction techniques, expanding land availability, and implementing rent control extensions and regulations. These policies are essential given the ongoing construction delays and high demand pressures faced in Germany’s cities.

In the midst of a packed week, Politics and legislation take center stage as the state parliament in Wiesbaden discusses general news topics such as defense policy, the state Constitution, and policy-and-legislation changes. On Wednesday, the reform of the state building code will be under discussion to boost housing construction, which is a key concern for the region that faces challenges in meeting growing demand, particularly in major cities like Frankfurt.
