Approaching the Alaska Summit: Trump Warns Putin

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated US-Russia summit, Ukraine and its European allies have articulated their key demands, centring around the preservation of Ukraine's agency and sovereignty without territorial concessions to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with European leaders, has emphasised the importance of genuine peace talks that recognise Ukraine's government legitimacy and territorial integrity. The coalition of nations, including Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Australia, and Japan, have united in their stance against any forced cession of territory to Russia.

European and Ukrainian officials anticipate Russia to present unacceptable or absurd demands, such as insisting on political conditions that would undermine Ukrainian sovereignty. Putin's reluctance to meet directly with Zelenskyy, fearing the optics of facing a democratic leader versus himself as an autocratic war criminal, further fuels these concerns.

The core demands from Ukraine and its supporters are: - Respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity without forced concessions - Genuine peace talks that recognise Ukraine’s agency and government legitimacy - Security guarantees that do not undermine Ukraine's independence

Meanwhile, Russia's position, indirectly reflected in the summit outcomes, suggests that Putin expects Ukraine to make territorial concessions, a proposition that Ukraine and its allies reject. The summit ended without an agreement, underscoring these fundamental disagreements.

As the summit approaches, Ukraine and its European backers are preparing for Russia to stall or set unreasonable preconditions. Ukraine has expressed a readiness to engage in diplomacy, as acknowledged by US President Donald Trump, but is resolute in its stance against any notion of ceding territory to Russia to end the war.

In addition to these demands, Ukraine is also focusing on securing security guarantees and maintaining a strong army. Air raid alerts have been sounded over eastern Ukraine due to Russian drones in the sky, and Ukrainian warning apps reported rocket attacks on the area of Chernihiv north of Kyiv.

The summit between Trump and Putin is scheduled to take place on Friday at the US Air Force base Elmendorf-Richardson, just outside of Anchorage, Alaska. The German government expects Trump to inform both Zelensky and the main European partners about the results on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Among the demands from Europe that Merz listed is that Ukraine must be at the table for any follow-up meeting. There must be a ceasefire before negotiations can commence. As the international community watches, the upcoming summit promises to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
