Washington Capitals Prepare for 2025-26 Season with Ovechkin at the Helm

As the 2025-26 NHL season nears, the Washington Capitals are set for another thrilling campaign with their star player, Alexander Ovechkin, leading the charge.

The Capitals have maintained a consistent run since their triumph in 2018, missing the playoffs only once in 2023. Last season, they topped their division and won a playoff series for the first time since their Stanley Cup victory in 2018.

Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer with 897 goals, continued his impressive form last season, scoring seven goals in his last eight games. Despite a leg fracture that limited him to 65 games, he managed to score 44 goals.

As Ovechkin approaches the 1500-game milestone in his career, which is nine regular-season games away, his teammates, such as Tom Wilson, have expressed their confidence in his continued contribution. Wilson stated, "If Ovechkin plays well, scores, and wants to stay, the Capitals will find a way to keep him."

Ovechkin himself has been focused on the team's success rather than his pursuit of individual records. He expressed, "I'm not thinking too much about what's next after next season, which will be my 21st." However, with little left to accomplish individually, it's realistic for Ovechkin to set ambitious goals for the team.

The Capitals' media day saw Ovechkin reluctant to discuss his future after next season, when he is entering the final year of his contract with the team. However, Wilson mentioned that no one will really think about Ovechkin leaving until it happens.

The Capitals' regular season will commence at home on October 8 against the Boston Bruins. They will play six preseason games from September 21 to October 4, including two games at the Bell Centre on November 20 and February 28.

The team's success last season was highlighted by the Jack Adams Award win for coach Spencer Carbery. With Ovechkin leading the way, the Capitals will be aiming to build on that success in the upcoming season.
