Approaching Discussion on Vladimir Putin's Perspective Regarding his Upcoming Encounter with President Trump

In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with former U.S. President Donald Trump on U.S. soil in Alaska. The meeting, marked by diplomatic protocol concessions, was a symbolic win for Putin, according to Russian investigative journalist Andrei Soldatov.

People in Moscow view Trump's moves as purely tactical, but the meeting holds great significance for Putin. It allows him to sell the meeting and any potential settlement to the Russian public and to himself, as well as to assert that Russia is regaining its status as a superpower.

Putin's objectives in the negotiations with Trump were not expected to change significantly. He believes that his army is winning, and there is no urgency for a deal. However, he needs to address domestic concerns, such as the war fatigue among the Russian public.

The Kremlin's goal is to denazify Ukraine, which would mean that Volodymyr Zelenskyy would not be the president of Ukraine if Putin has his way. Putin's main objective in the meeting was to avoid committing to a ceasefire or any pause in Russia's war in Ukraine while using the meeting to press his narrative that Ukraine's pro-Western alignment and erosion of Russian influence in Eastern Europe are root causes of the conflict.

Putin views the meeting as a symbolic win largely because it was the first time he visited a Western country since ordering the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and because it was held on U.S. military territory. By meeting Trump face-to-face without conceding to a ceasefire, Putin maintained a stance of strength. He emphasized the historical closeness between the U.S. and Russia geographically and diplomatically during the meeting, portraying the summit as a constructive event that highlighted their status as "neighbors" despite serious conflicts.

Furthermore, Putin's ability to engage Trump without conceding on a pause or withdrawal can be interpreted as a diplomatic win in the sense that he maintained leverage and avoided international isolation in a high-profile bilateral encounter.

In the past, Trump has claimed he could end the conflict in Ukraine in 24 hours, but multiple deadlines given by him to Putin to end the war have not been met. If Trump insists that Putin follows through on any demands made by Zelenskyy, Putin is not expected to be flexible in response. This is because his primary goal is to undermine Zelenskyy's position, and the Kremlin wants Ukraine to be denazified, which is interpreted as getting rid of Zelenskyy.

Despite the sanctions, the Russian economy has not been crushed as many economists predicted in 2022. However, the long-term implications of the meeting and its impact on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine remain to be seen.
