Competition emerges for the position of Crumbach's replacement as BSW state chairman in Brandenburg, with differing contenders vying for the role.

Double Leadership Tussle in Brandenburg's BSW State Branch

In the wake of Vice-Federal Chairwoman Friederike Benda's nomination as the next BSW state leader in Brandenburg, a pair of unexpected contenders has risen. Andreas Eichner and Vinzenz Lorenz, who previously aligned with The Left, are gearing up to challenge the status quo, aiming to bag the leadership positions currently held by Robert Crumbach. The "Tagesspiegel" was the first to break this news, with both candidates officially announcing their bid in a letter to the German Press Agency.

The candidates see the BSW in a tricky spot

The BSW state association appears to be in turbulent waters, according to the letter. Dissatisfaction abounds, and both contenders highlight structural development and enhanced grassroots involvement as crucial tasks. "We need fresh blood," the letter declares. Born and bred in Dahme-Spreewald and Elbe-Elster respectively, Eichner and Lorenz each bring unique perspectives to the table. Lorenz boasts a stint on The Left's state board, while Eichner sought the deputy state chairman position within The Left, alas unsuccessfully.

Nominated by the state board, Benda was the top choice for the state chairmanship last week. Her mission is to expedite the onboarding of new party members, a process that has been moving at a snail's pace thus far.

Crumbach keeps his cool

Despite the surprise move, outgoing state chairman Crumbach remains unfazed. "We're a dynamic party. It's only natural that there are more applications for the state board," he told the German Press Agency, emphasizing the unanimous decision made by the state board to nominate Benda as state chairwoman. "I have full confidence that my party will thrive under her leadership. Benda nearly secured an 11% vote in the federal election, making her a formidable candidate."

Crumbach announced his resignation as the Alliance for Progress and Social Justice (BSW) chairman in mid-April, citing the double workload as the primary reason. His resignation is also seen in the context of the ongoing debate about the segregation of ministerial and party offices within the BSW. Party leader Sahra Wagenknecht strongly advocates for separation. Since 2024, the SPD and BSW have been governing together in Brandenburg, with the BSW narrowly missing out on a seat in the Bundestag.

In the midst of the political landscape, the emerging candidates Andreas Eichner and Vinzenz Lorenz, with roots in EC countries like Dahme-Spreewald and Elbe-Elster, have entered the fray, aiming to reform the BSW state association through increased vocational training and grassroots involvement. The course of policy-and-legislation and general-news will closely follow the unfolding dynamics in Brandenburg's BSW state branch, as the pair challenges the incumbent leader, Robert Crumbach, who remains calm and confident in the face of this unexpected leadership tussle.
