Application for asylum drops by fifty percent
Germany has witnessed a substantial decrease in asylum applications in the first seven months of 2021, as reported by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
The total number of initial asylum applications from January to July 2021 stood at approximately 70,000. This figure represents a marked reduction compared to the same period in 2020, when the number was around 140,783.
This decline follows stricter policies introduced by the German government, as Dobrindt stated that the reduction in asylum applications is a result of the government's efforts.
In July 2021, 8,293 initial asylum applications were filed, which is approximately 45% less than in the same month last year (18,503 applications). However, there was an increase of about one-fifth compared to the previous month, June 2021, which saw 6,860 applications.
Dobrindt's orders at the borders resulted in a total of approximately 16,363 asylum applications being turned away from January to July 2021. This includes 9,506 turnaways in July alone.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees recorded 6,357 initial asylum applications in June 2021, when accounting for those turned away.
Dobrindt intends to continue the current course, aiming for procedures at the EU's external borders, faster decisions, and consistent deportations. He also expressed a desire to take action against smugglers, stating that the state should regulate who enters the country, not criminal smuggling gangs.
The Minister's efforts have resulted in a decrease of approximately 60% in total asylum applications from January to July 2021, compared to the same period in 2020. This decrease reflects ongoing changes since 2023, with overall asylum applications in 2024 dropping to about 250,945 from 329,120 in 2023.
