Disputes over Rape Verdicts in Stadtpark Wave Controversy

Multiple individuals convicted of raping a 15-year-old in Hamburg's Stadtpark have filed appeals against their sentences. As of now, the exact number of defendants challenging the verdicts remains unclear, with the Federal Court of Justice set to address these appeals.

In late November, a juvenile chamber at the regional court handed down prison sentences to nine defendants, ranging from probation to nearly three years imprisonment without parole. One defendant was acquitted, and a second initial defendant was cleared in April. The juvenile sentences of eight defendants were suspended, leaving their fates undecided for another half a year.

Spearheaded by those defending the 15-year-old victim, the proceedings centered around allegations of rape that occurred in September 2020. The offenders, aged between 19 and 23, had exploited the presence of alcohol in the victim, who displayed signs of intoxication following a party.

The trial endured for over sixteen months and was conducted in secrecy, save for parts of the verdict.

News organization NDR 90.3 first reported the appeals against the rape sentences.
