Apostolic Nuncio post in Iraq now held by Bishop Wachowski
Mgr Mirosław Wachowski, a seasoned diplomat of the Holy See, has been appointed as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq by Pope Leo XIV. The announcement was made on an unspecified date by Mgr Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, in the presence of the three sections of the Secretariat of State.
Born in Pisz, Poland, on May 8, 1970, Mgr Wachowski began his ecclesiastical studies and went on to study canon law. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 2004, and was ordained a priest on June 15, 1996, incardinated in the diocese of Ełk.
Mgr Wachowski's diplomatic career has been marked by diverse assignments. He served in the Pontifical representations in Senegal, at the Permanent Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and the United Nations Office and Specialized Agencies in Vienna, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland, and finally, at the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State.
Before his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq, Mgr Wachowski served in various roles within the Holy See's diplomatic service. Notably, he served as the Undersecretary for Relations with States, a position he assumed on October 24, 2019.
In April 2024, Mgr Mitjo Leskovar was appointed to Kinshasa (DRC), succeeding Mgr Wachowski in Baghdad. However, no information was provided about when Mgr Wachowski's term as Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq will begin.
Mgr Wachowski speaks Italian, English, French, Spanish, and Russian, skills that will undoubtedly aid him in his new role in Iraq. The appointment of Mgr Wachowski to Baghdad continues a long line of nuncios to Iraq, dating back to the French apostolic delegate Henri-Marie Amanton from 1857 to 1865.
Concurrently with his appointment, Mgr Wachowski was elevated to the titular see of Villamagna di Proconsolare with the dignity of Archbishop. No information was provided about any ceremonies or events related to Mgr Wachowski's appointment to Baghdad.
Mgr Wachowski studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, a prestigious institution that prepares priests for service in the diplomatic corps of the Holy See. His appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq marks a significant milestone in his career and promises to bring renewed diplomatic ties between the Holy See and Iraq.
