In November 1943, Nazi Germany launched a daring mission codenamed "Adler" to kidnap British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This historical event serves as the backdrop for the 1976 film "The Eagle Has Landed," directed by John Sturges, who passed away shortly after the film's release, marking it as his final work.

The film, based on the novel of the same name by Jack Higgins, is a solid, old-fashioned adventure filled with dramatic events and characters. Michael Caine portrays Colonel Kurt Steiner, a former German war hero and Luftwaffe officer, who leads a group of German paratroopers disguised as Polish soldiers in the mission.

The operation takes place in the quiet village of Sudley, where Churchill was spending the weekend. The mission, however, is doomed as the news had already reached the Allies. The Germans, with the help of agent Joanna Grey and Irish freedom fighter Liam Devlin, played by Donald Sutherland, planned the abduction of the British premier.

The film's runtime is 125 minutes, providing ample time to delve into the intricacies of the plot. Anthony Quayle portrays Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, while Donald Pleasence plays the role of Heinrich Himmler. Robert Duvall plays Colonel Max Radl, and Jenny Agutter is cast as Molly Prior.

One of the soldiers, while saving a young girl from drowning, reveals his true identity, adding a human touch to the otherwise tense narrative. Critics, including Vincent Canby of The New York Times, praised the film for being enjoyable without worrying about historical accuracy.

"The Eagle Has Landed" falls under the genres of War and was produced in 1976. The film is available until October 14, 2025, for those who wish to experience this classic adventure.
