In a surprising turn of events, Rauf Aregbesola, a former commissioner, governor, and federal minister under the All Progressives Congress (APC) for over two decades, has publicly denounced the party. His decision has sparked a heated debate, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Lagos APC trading accusations.

Rauf Aregbesola, now the Interim National Secretary of the ADC, has been vocal about his criticism of the APC, labelling it a "failed government" and urging Nigerians to vote out the party in the 2027 elections. His comments have not gone unnoticed, with the Lagos APC viewing them as a betrayal of trust and values Aregbesola once professed under their party.

The Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, described Aregbesola as a betrayer, stating that his comments reek of political desperation and opportunism. The APC in Lagos, however, maintains its focus on building a greater Lagos and a stronger Nigeria, remaining united, focused, and determined to continue delivering dividends of democracy to their people.

In response, the ADC, through its Youth Frontiers national publicity secretary Edwin Abor, strongly rejected the accusations of betrayal and political opportunism made by the Lagos APC. They framed Aregbesola's efforts to recruit members in Lagos as part of a legitimate "New Deal" that is gaining support nationwide. The ADC assured that attacks on their national secretary or intimidation of their leaders would not save the APC from a crushing defeat.

Aregbesola's "New Deal" promises Nigerians a new path, contradicting the APC’s narrative that labels his actions as betrayals and political desperation. However, the Lagos APC finds his new deal lacking substance, structure, or credibility. They warn that politics without loyalty leads to irrelevance, signalling their rejection of his move and his criticisms of the APC.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the APC have been accused by Aregbesola of failing the country in the past. The APC in Lagos, on the other hand, rejects outright falsehoods and political showmanship aimed at misleading the public. They emphasize that if the APC government has failed, Aregbesola must take responsibility for his role in governance.

This political drama unfolds amidst the backdrop of the upcoming 2027 elections, with both parties urging Nigerians to embrace their respective parties. The ADC characterizes itself as the quickest path to Nigeria’s progress and prosperity, while the APC in Lagos is committed to building a greater Lagos and a stronger Nigeria.

As the political landscape shifts, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact the elections and the future of Nigerian politics.
