Under the intense gaze of the public, the high-profile criminal trial of music industry giant Sean "Diddy" Combs (55) commenced in Manhattan this week. The proceedings, which took place in Judge Arun Subramanian's (46) courtroom, saw Combs confessing his nerves to the judge, according to NBC News.

The trial, starting with the jury selection process, is set to officially begin on May 12, with opening statements to follow. Over three dozen New Yorkers filled the courtroom for the initial jury selection, questioning them about their knowledge of Sean "Diddy" Combs' embattled case.

Entering the Arena

As part of the jury selection process, potential jurors were provided with a list of over 100 locations and individuals. Familiar faces such as Michael B. Jordan (38), Mike Myers (61), and Kanye West (47) were among those potentially appearing at trial. The jurors were asked to disclose if they knew any of these individuals to evaluate their impartiality. The list also included the names of women who have filed civil lawsuits against Combs, like his previous lover Cassie Ventura (38) and singer Dawn Richard (41), who used to be part of his hip-hop collective.

Presentations focused on a 2016 video that captured Combs getting physical with his ex-partner in a Los Angeles hotel corridor. Broadcast by CNN last year, the video was initially sought to be excluded by Combs' defense team as evidence.

By the trial's end, a panel of twelve jurors and six alternates will decide whether Combs exploited his power and influence to sexually exploit women over the past twenty years, as stated in the prosecution's five-count indictment.

Not Guilty, M'Lord!

Combs has been in custody since mid-September 2024. The prosecution accuses the 55-year-old of several offenses, including racketeering, sex trafficking, and other criminal activities. The main allegation is that Combs manipulated women, including Ventura, to engage in drug-fueled sexual encounters with male sex workers, which were filmed as "Freak Offs." Combs strongly denies all accusations, pleading "not guilty."

On the first day of jury selection, Combs appeared in a black turtleneck sweater, a white collared shirt, and charcoal gray pants. After obtaining permission from Judge Subramanian to wear his own clothes, Combs entered the courtroom, where he greeted and exchanged pleasantries with his legal team consisting of Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos.

Throughout the selection process, Combs nodded or shook his head in response to various questions. When his attorneys requested a brief restroom break, Combs apologized to the judge, confessing his nerves during the proceedings.

The trial will likely span eight weeks.
