Tides of Hope: Munich's Eisbach Wave Awaits Green Light After Fatal Accident

Anticipated Upcoming Surf Opportunity in the City - Anticipation runs high in the city as officials work towards the imminent launch of the surfing spot

Hang tight, surf enthusiasts! The city of Munich is currently mulling over whether to reopen the iconic Eisbach wave, following an in-depth investigation into the unfortunate accident that occurred back in April. According to Second Mayor Dominik Krause, they aim to make a decision by mid-July.

Krause is keeping his fingers crossed, optimistically announcing, "It'll be back on soon!"

Behind the scenes, a new safety concept is being drafted for the surf wave. The city is working closely with local surfers to address any lingering concerns and ensure the wave's safety. According to Krause, the discussions have been productive and marked by mutual trust.

The investigation into the fatal accident closed last Monday, with the Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office concluding that they could not uncover any additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The Public Prosecutor's Office cleared the city of any criminal wrongdoing in the matter.

The deadly incident occurred on the night of April 16/17, when a 33-year-old woman, along with her partner, an experienced surfer, arrived at the Eisbach wave for a nighttime surfing session. Around 11:30 p.m., the woman's partner suddenly heard her cries for help and witnessed her disappearing beneath the surface with her board. Despite his best attempts to rescue her in the turbulent currents, he sadly was unsuccessful. Bystanders quickly summoned the fire department, but it was the specially trained rescue forces who ultimately extracted the 33-year-old from the water.

She was immediately transported to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her tragic passing roughly a week later.

While the circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, Krause remains steadfast in his desire to see the Eisbach wave reopened as promptly as possible. Nevertheless, he emphasized that this will only happen following a thorough review of the investigation files and urgent legal advice.

The wave's closure has ignited protests and debates within the local and international surfing communities. Many fear that the iconic Eisbach wave, which gained global fame as a premier urban surfing spot since surfers were granted legal access in 2010, might face permanent restrictions or an extended closure.
