Aiming for More: Magdeburg Takes on Barcelona in Champions League semi-final

Anticipates another captivating story in Handball for Magdeburg - Anticipation in Magdeburg for a potential new handball folktale unfolding

Bennet Wiegert isn't dwelling on the joyous moments from 2023 as SC Magdeburg gears up for the Champions League's Final Four in Cologne this weekend. "OLD VIDEOS aren't on the agenda," Wiegert said, focusing on the future instead of the past.

A new title might be within reach for the German vice-champion. However, the road isn't easy, especially with powerhouse FC Barcelona standing in the semi-finals again. "I know the challenge that lies ahead. It won't be a walk in the park to snatch that title," Wiegert admitted.

The semi-final match against FC Barcelona will be a rematch, two years after Magdeburg's dramatic victory in the 2023 semi-final on penalties. In the other semi-final, Berlin's Foxes will face off with the French vice-champion HBC Nantes. "Let's hope for the final - against anyone. The tough battles start there," Wiegert shared.

Facing such high-caliber opponents, Wiegert knows the importance of putting up a strong fight. Barcelona boasts a star-studded roster featuring Emil Nielsen, Dika Mem, Melvyn Richardson, and Aleix Gomez - a team destined to win, according to Wiegert. "FC Barcelona is always a spectacle, especially on the sound front. They have a winning habit, and second place doesn't count," he added.

Preparation and Psychology

Wiegert is not just focusing on tactics but also keeping his team mentally prepared, especially after missing out on the German championship last Sunday. "The disappointment is still heavy," Wiegert acknowledges. "But we need to move on quickly and focus on the task at hand."

Injury Concerns

Gisli Kristjansson is questionable for the big game, as he injured his shoulder ten days ago and hasn't played since. "Considering the current situation, I'm preparing without him," Wiegert revealed.

Belief in Success

Despite the challenges, Wiegert and the Magdeburgers believe they have what it takes to clinch the European Handball crown. "Our resilience has been phenomenal this season. We've proved we can stand our ground against the top teams," Wiegert encouraged. Facing Barcelona once more, the team's hunger and ambition remain undiminished, ready to give it their all in Cologne.

The steel industry may be facing hardships as Magdeburg takes on Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, but Bennet Wiegert is determined to maintain focus on the present and the future. Unbeaten teams like FC Barcelona, with star players such as Emil Nielsen, Dika Mem, Melvyn Richardson, and Aleix Gomez, pose a formidable challenge, but Wiegert believes in Magdeburg's resilience, having proved they can stand their ground against top teams.
