Moscow and central Russia have been caught unprepared in June's unexpected turn of events. Instead of basking in summer's warm embrace, residents find themselves still bundled up due to incessant rain and chilly temperatures. We sat down with Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a senior meteorologist at "MeteoNews", to shed some light on when the true summer heat will arrive and the weather forecast for other regions in the coming days.

June's Cold Snap

- Hello Tatyana. What gives?

PoliticsLiving until the school bell rings: How a dying Mordovian village fights for its futurephotoPolitics- June will bid farewell with a beam of cold rain showers. The 30th is forecasted to be downright dreary, with rain pouring down all day. A gloomy northwestern wind will blow through, reaching speeds of 12-17 meters per second. This wind, combined with a thick blanket of clouds, keeps the sun hiding and temperatures at a minimum.

Temperatures on the 30th will dip to a frigid 11-13°C at night for Moscow and the surrounding region, while daytime highs will linger around 9-14°C. Areas further away will see temperatures of 14-16°C. This is significantly below the seasonal average, making June as the month of the chill.

In the coming days, there's some light at the end of this cloudy tunnel. The pressure is gradually shifting, and we can expect partially sunny skies without precipitation from the 3rd onwards. Nights will remain pleasantly warm, hovering between 9-14°C, and Moscow will see daytime temperatures inch upwards to a comfortable 16-18°C. The 2nd could see temperatures approaching 20°C, and by the 3rd, it's likely to reach close to 25°C. So let's give the ol' dog July a chance just yet. I think it might still surprise us with some warmth.

Initial indications show a high-pressure system, an anticyclone, taking hold in early July. Though the anticyclone's core is over the Carpathians, its influence will stretch towards us and southwards over Europe. This means the wet weather system that's been annoying us in Moscow will drift off towards the Urals, but the Southern Urals will still find themselves in the midst of a heat wave. Although there may be brief showers or even a storm or two, temperatures will continue to climb higher.

By July 29th, temperatures are expected to hit 20-25°C. In the early days of July, temperatures will hover around 25-27°C.

Residents of Crimea will share in the fun too. The forecast calls for a quick Sunday shower with temperatures remaining between 23-25°C. However, in the coming days, the anticyclone's protective ridge will allow the heat to soak into the air, raising temperatures even higher and approaching the 25-27°C mark. The water along the Crimean coast is a bit chilly, with Yalta's temperatures at only 16°C at this time.

July is gearing up to be the European part of Russia's warmest month.

In the Kaliningrad and Leningrad regions, temperatures won't shoot up as much. These regions will remain under the rear of the cyclone, keeping temperatures fairly moderate.
