In the thrilling conclusion of NCIS: Origins Season 1, we were left pondering the heart-wrenching fate of Lala Dominguez, the encounters between Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his second wife, and even the reappearance of Mike Franks' brother. Conspicuously absent from the finale was Cliff Wheeler, the Special Agent in Charge of the NIS Pendleton office, played by Patrick Fischler. The events leading to Cliff Wheeler's indefinite suspension, as shown in the penultimate episode of NCIS: Origins Season 1, revolved around the quest to unmask the true Sandman killer. At the onset of "Darlin', Don't Refrain," Wheeler was under fire for botching the Sandman case after Bugs Floyd – the initial confessed killer – was killed in prison. The real culprit, Luke Fletcher, who ran Leroy Jethro Gibbs' veterans support group, ended up being the culprit, resulting in a fatal confrontation with Gibbs. Feeling pressured, Wheeler confessed to his superior that he was the one who destroyed the document mentioning Bugs' partner and Operation Sundown, fearing that it would only complicate the already tumultuous case.

It seems possible that he'll resume managing the Camp Pendleton office to remain involved in the lives of Gibbs, Franks, and the rest.
