In the heart of the tennis season, world number two Iga Świątek is preparing to defend her Madrid Open title. The clay-court queen, who's dominated this surface over the past few years, winning the French Open an impressive four times, finds herself having a somewhat challenging season. However, she's optimistic about turning things around at the Caja Magica.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Świątek shared, "People tend to forget that we're humans too. The expectations, for sure, are high, but they've been high for me since 2022. I'm just focusing on keeping my job and ignoring what people say. Honestly, they have no idea what's going on in our lives, so if they have preconceived notions, let them think what they will. But I'm grateful for their high hopes."

Kicking off her clay season with a quarter-final appearance in Stuttgart last week, the 23-year-old Pole came up short against Jelena Ostapenko, losing to the Latvian for the sixth time in six meetings. Although she's feeling good on the court, Świątek is still seeking that confirmation that she can reach her peak level on her beloved clay.

"These first few days and the first week of practicing is what I love about clay because tennis for me makes the most sense here. I can be more creative in tactics, and it's the most logical surface for me," Świątek added.

Upon arrival in Madrid, the second seed faces an intriguing challenge in the form of teen sensation Alexandra Eala, who shocked Świątek during her historic semi-final run at the Miami Open last month. Speaking of her upcoming clash, Świątek commented, "I feel like I know this place pretty well, so I'll use my experience, but the experience doesn't necessarily play a part. I've got to approach this match like any other and not reconsider what happened in Miami."

Meanwhile, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is also eyeing a strong performance on clay this season. Having squandered three match points in a nail-biting 2024 loss to Świątek in Madrid, Sabalenka firmly believes that should she find her previous form, "I think I have big chances to perform well on the clay court season this year."

Sabalenka enters Madrid on the heels of a runner-up finish in Stuttgart and will be up against Anna Blinkova in the second round.

First-round action in Madrid saw former champion Petra Kvitova squander a straightforward lead against American Katie Volynets, while Britain's Emma Raducanu won her first outdoor clay-court match since 2022 against Suzan Lamens.

Enrichment Data: Świątek managed to win a hard-fought match against Alexandra Eala 4-6, 6-4, 6-2[2][3] after being down a set and 4-4 in the second set. Despite some early inconsistencies, Świątek demonstrated her clay-court resilience and managed critical points better than Eala, who had previously upset her conqueror in Miami.[1][4] Aryna Sabalenka, Świątek's rival, has high hopes for her clay court season after narrowly losing to Świątek in the 2024 Madrid final. Świątek's sub-par season may be related to struggles in maintaining her Top 2 ranking and the pressure that comes with it, as she's held this position since March 2022.[4]
