GAZA STRIP AID DISTRIBUTION TO BEGIN UNDER NEW MECHANISM Amidst Ongoing Conflict

Israeli media outlets have reported that the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) will start distributing aid in the Gaza Strip through a new mechanism, after numerous fatal attacks left residents reeling. The first distribution center is set to open on Tuesday.

The GHF, a newly formed organization coordinating with Israel and the US, aims to alleviate hunger in the conflict-ridden region by centralizing aid distribution through hubs. However, many aid groups and the United Nations have raised concerns about the new system.

Critics argue that the mechanism violates humanitarian principles of neutrality and independence as it is closely linked to a warring party, Israel. Moreover, they express worries about the potential for further displacement of Palestinians, given the centralized distribution system's requirement for residents to cross through military lines to reach the hubs.

The initial four hubs, located in central Gaza and Rafah, plan to expand to the north. Aid is transported in armored vehicles and guarded by private contractors to prevent diversion by criminal gangs or militants, according to sources. The United Nations will continue to provide non-food aid, as GHF is not equipped to handle these supplies.

The ongoing conflict has exacerbated hunger and humanitarian needs, making the effective distribution of aid crucial. Although the GHF aims to reach at least a million Palestinians by the end of the week, questions remain regarding the efficiency and fairness of the distribution during ongoing conflict.

Furthermore, aid groups and the UN express concern about the safety of civilians, especially the elderly, disabled children, sick, and injured, who may not be able to reach the distribution centers due to violence in the region. The former head of GHF has also expressed doubts and resigned on Sunday, citing concerns about maintaining "the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence."

In the face of escalating violence, Israel's army has called upon residents of most areas in southern Gaza to leave, as troop deployments continue. The humanitarian crisis unfolds amid aerial bombardments, resulting in significant casualties and displacement.

  1. Despite the new mechanism for aid distribution in the Gaza Strip, concerns have been raised about its adherence to humanitarian principles due to its links with a warring party, Israel.
  2. Besides food aid, non-food supplies will still be provided by the United Nations, as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is not equipped to handle them.
  3. The ongoing conflict, with its associated dangers, has raised questions about the safety of civilians, especially the elderly, disabled children, sick, and injured, who may struggle to reach the aid distribution centers.
