Anticipating a Successful Soccer Season Awaits Hellgate Team
Hellgate Knights Soar to Victory in Season Opener
The Hellgate Knights soccer program has made a strong start to the 2022 season, with both the boys' and girls' teams securing impressive victories in their first four games.
Chaucer Larson, a Hellgate alum and Spanish teacher at the school, has taken the helm as the new head coach for the girls' team. Under her leadership, the girls' varsity team has won their opening games against Flathead (8-0), Glacier (4-2), Butte (9-0), and Big Sky (1-0). The boys' team, coached by Fraser Horton, has also shown great form, with victories against Flathead (10-0), Glacier (4-0), Butte (5-0), and Big Sky (4-0).
Larson fosters an inclusive environment on the girls' team by starting practices with a group huddle, shoutouts, and warmups as a full program, rather than separating JV from varsity. This approach has been well-received by the team, with junior Kennedy Peterson noticing the intentionality from the new coaching staff.
The boys' JV team is being developed up to varsity standards by coach Fraser Horton. The boys' varsity team is largely a new team this season, with only four returning varsity players. Despite this, they are aiming high, with their sights set on winning state this year, which would add another state title to their existing eight.
The Hellgate teams have a 19-goal differential as of now, showcasing their dominance on the field. The soccer season started on Aug. 29, after two weeks of practice, and the teams play their home games at the Rattlesnake fields.
The most important game on the schedule is the cross-town game against Sentinel on Oct. 14. The girls' varsity team will take the field at 3:00, followed by the boys' team at 5:00. On this day, Hellgate will also host Sentinel teams and schools from Missoula County, including Big Sky High School and Seeley-Swan High School.
Preseason tryouts for the girls' team were on Aug. 15, and for the boys' team on Aug. 18. The Hellgate Knights are off to a flying start, and fans are eagerly anticipating their continued success throughout the season.
