Magdeburg anticipates a fresh story of handball success - Anticipating a Fresh Narrative: Magdeburg Eyeing a Resplendent Handball Saga
Coach Bennet Wiegert chooses to dwell on the future rather than dwell on the past, as SC Magdeburg prepares for the Champions League showdown this weekend in Cologne. The bitter taste of their recent Bundesliga loss to Berlin's Füchse lingers, but Wiegert's got his eye on the bigger prize. "Ain't no time to look back. Gotta 'foCuS' on the future," said the trainer, employing a catchy acronym for 'Focus.'
Though Wiegert recognizes the formidable challenge ahead, he doesn't despair. "I know this road's gonna be thorny. Winning this title ain't no walk in the park," he admitted. A tough semifinal match awaits, with FC Barcelona—reigning champions and record winners—once more their formidable opponents. In the other semifinal, French runners-up HBC Nantes battle Berlin's Füchse. "Shoot, I hope we reach the final, no matter who we got to face. Just making it that far's gonna be tough enough," said Wiegert.
It's no surprise that the Catalans boast a star-studded lineup, complete with Denmark's world-class goalkeeper Emil Nielsen, French backcourt aces Dika Mem and Melvyn Richardson, and Spain's right wing Aleix Gomez. "FC Barcelona, now that's a name with a special ring to it. That team's used to win and it's destined to win. There ain't no second place for 'em," said Wiegert, emphasizing the Spanish serial champions' formidable reputation.
Wiegert ain't backing down, though. Encouraged by their 2021 semifinal victory and their recent 28:23 home win in the group phase, the Magdeburg squad has faith in their chances. "Barcelona's a top team for sure, but them being unbeatable? I ain't buying that, 'cause the same goes for us. It'll come down to the day's form," said Wiegert. "Who plays the better handball in Cologne's gonna win. I'm jist as confident we can do it."
Wiegert also adopts the role of team psychologist, helping the team recover from their narrowly missed title last weekend. "I still feel that disappointment quite strongly. The loss to the Füchse last Sunday hurt, but we can't let it get to us. We've gotta keep pushing forward," admitted Wiegert.
The trophy-less season ain't deterring Wiegert. He still believes in a happy ending for Magdeburg. "The team has shown some incredible resilience. We've got all the tools needed to win, and I reckon we can carry that success over to the Champions League," said Wiegert, rallying his troupe.
Gisli Kristjansson, the team's defender, may not be a part of this European adventure due to a shoulder injury sustained ten days prior, which caused him to miss the last two Bundesliga matches. "With Gisli's current state, I guess I'm planning without him," said Wiegert. But he remains optimistic, maintaining that the team's hunger and desire are stronger than ever after last weekend's loss.
