Anticipates Encounter with Schwerin: Iconic Handball Player Wieland Schmidt
Handball Legends Gather in Historic Schwerin
Eye that gleam on Wieland Schmidt? It's pure joy, reminiscing about Schwerin and the Congress Hall. "Schwerin was always a sight for sore eyes," beams the former handball goalkeeper of SC Magdeburg, now 71. "We were always warmly welcomed there," he adds with a grin.
On July 24th, Schwerin invites Schmidt back. Alongside marathon Olympic champion Waldemar Cierpinski, he'll be a star guest at the Schwerin Capitol cinema for an unforgettable chat hosted by Schwerin Volkszeitung and our website. The evening starts at 7 pm sharp at the Schwerin Capitol. The duo plans to delve into the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, where the DDR handball team clinched gold.
Schwerin holds special memories for Schmidt, who often played there during the DDR era with SCM and the national team. Matches were tough, but the atmosphere more than made up for it. "The hall was massive, and there was no net behind the goals," he recalls, "so the balls seemed to soar when they'd miss the goal." The absence of a net made it impossible to execute a counter-attack, he adds.
During the same era, SV Post Schwerin took the Oberliga by storm in 1969/70 and held its ground until the end of the DDR. The huge sports and congress hall made Post one of the Oberliga's best-attended handball clubs. "We loved playing there because the fans were always passionate about handball," Schmidt says, who represented DDR in 276 international games.
Schwerin still holds a special place in Schmidt's heart. He last visited a few years ago, for a concert with Roland Kaiser. "It's a great city," he concludes.
On July 25th, Schwerin isn't done with greatness. Schmidt and Cierpinski head to Neubrandenburg the next day. Cierpinski, turning 75 on August 3rd, is a running legend, revered for his Olympic marathon victories in Montreal (1976) and Moscow (1980).
The Neubrandenburg event kicks off at 7 pm at the Latücht cinema. Tickets, priced at €27.50, can be purchased from our website, over the phone at 0395 35 116 134, or at the service point, our address, and CTS Eventim online.
Neubrandenburg's event is nearly sold out, but there are still tickets available for Schwerin. Get yours at the Capitol cinema. The media group of our website hosted its first legends' talk last year, with DDR football stars Jürgen Croy and Gerd Kische. The tickets were gone in just two days.
This years' legends' talks have the support of Torgelower MeLe Unternehmensgruppe, Neuwoges Neubrandenburg, and the Kino Capitol in Schwerin. For further details on the event, tickets, or the history of the SV Post Schwerin handball club, checking local Schwerin event listings, the official websites of the sports clubs, or reaching out to local sports authorities is recommended.
In connection with the Schwerin Capitol cinema, Schmidt plans to discuss his experiences during the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, focusing on the DDR handball team, as he shares a memorable evening with marathon Olympic champion Waldemar Cierpinski on July 24th. Additionally, Schwerin's fascinating sports and congress hall made Post one of the Oberliga's best-attended handball clubs, and in the DDR era, Schmidt often played there with SCM and the national team, experiencing passion from the till the end.
